Summer Break Fun
All About Summer Break
- THE HISTORY: Summer break is a school tradition that began in the 1800's. It was a time students helped their families on farms bring in their harvests. Now teachers and students alike mark their calendars in early January, counting down days til their Summer Break. Today, districts take from 6 to 14 weeks off for summer break depending on where you live in the United States. Students at our Westside District get about 8 weeks off and teachers have about 6 to 7 weeks off.
- TRADITIONS: Summer is a great time for families to take vacations and/or spend more time together. I remember summer as a time having sleep-overs with cousins, family trips to Three Rivers, and ending the summer picking grapes and spreading them on trays to make raisins. We worked hard and looked forward to getting paid and going shopping for new clothes and school supplies for the coming year. What are your family summer traditions?
- WHAT ARE YOU DOING DURING YOUR SUMMER BREAK? : Write about your daily activities in a journal. One day you will look back at your journal and it will be a fun reminder of your time off from school.

My uncle from New York City gave me the album "Free to Be You and Me" when I was in second grade. It became one of my favorite albums to sing and listen to as a child. My Uncle Max was friends with one of the producers of this album and it was autographed by a woman named Marlo Thomas. When I became a teacher many years later I found the book with stories and lyrics. I wasn't able to share it with you this year but I hope you enjoy the songs and stories from this YouTube video. Each song and story has a special lesson to learn, so watch and listen carefully.
