WEEKLY SPIRIT DAYS: Show your school support and spirit by participating in our weekly spirit days. Every Wednesday is our AVID Day and we encourage our students to wear College Wear in support of their favorite college. Every Friday is Esperanza Spirit Day. Wear your Esperanza Eagles shirt or the colors gold, black, grey, or white.
TYPE, TYPE, TYPE!! The year is really moving quickly. We are now on the down slope of our 2nd grade year! Students need to become very familiar with the keyboard and typing. We have computer lab once a week and students have an opportunity to use computer once a week during centers in the class but this is not enough. Something you may want to consider as a homework option is choosing to have students practice their spelling words by typing them or challenge them to create sentences with each of the spelling words on the computer. If you do not have a printer, simply email the attachment to me and I will make sure your child receives homework credit.
Next year students will be required to take the annual state test. The test is taken solely on the computer and it is not a multiple choice formatted assessment. Students are required to type complete sentences to their answers and though they may be familiar with the content, the typing slows down the process tremendously. Your help is needed to better prepare our students for success.

HELP NEEDED: I have a number of prep jobs that need to be completed to help start the school year. Please let me know if you are able to help and I can send the job up to the office for pick-up, meet at my gate before or after-school, or send with your child if it is manageable.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT! I appreciate the support many of you have given to our class with supplies and support you have given to our school with PTA membership. THANK YOU!
Every Monday your child will have completed assignments come home in his/her homework folder. Please take the time to review their work to ensure they have complete understanding of concepts learned. It really takes our partnership and working together to ensure the best quality of education for our children.
OUR CLASS NEEDS: Please send in a set of OVER THE EAR HEADPHONES for your child. Our class will be working on our FastForWord Reading Program 3 times per week. It is a program that requires individual concentration to have greater success. We will be using iPads and/or Chromebooks for this program in the next few weeks. A set of child sized earphones would be most beneficial.

We have received SO MANY PTA Membership forms from families. Our class will be given $100 in free books due to the large enrollment from our class so THANK YOU!
I have also received an abundance of supplies that we will need this school year.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES: I have supplied your child with a folder, notebook, pencil box, eraser, crayons, highlighter, pencil, and bookmark. If your child has their own special box and/or folder they would like to use that is okay. We go through supplies quickly so donations of items are always welcomed (see DONATIONS page under CLASS INFORMATION). While you are out shopping for back-to-school sales, please send in a set of over-the-ear headphones. We will be using them to help implement the Fast ForWord reading program this year.
PLEASE BRING: Pack a light sweater or sweatshirt inside your child's backpack each week. Classrooms get cold with the A/C running during these hot months. Water bottles are okay to have in the classroom, however, please put a guard over the bottle if it has been frozen to alleviate condensation.
Most importantly, please return the Student Information Packet no later than Friday! :-)

HEADPHONES NEEDED FOR IPADS: We are about 10 headsets short. We recently took our initial assessment and students are ready to begin Fast ForWord. At this time our iPads are almost ready to be checked out to our class but in the meantime we will only be practicing during our computer lab time. Please consider sending in with your child or making a donation toward the classroom so we are all prepared and ready to begin FastForWord on our iPads so that is most effective for your child. Students without headsets will still work on the program but it really requires extensive listening skills...I'm afraid outside interference will effect their performance ability.
Welcome to second grade in room 9! I look forward to meeting all of you and excited about this year's journey. I hope you are all well rested and ready to begin our school year. Please refer to this page for important announcements that I post weekly. Also, take the time to explore the various pages and resources available for you on this website.

Book Fair: Students really enjoyed visiting the book fair this week! Friday, August 25th is the last day. We earned $100 in free books thanks to our classroom PTA Membership Drive. Thank you for your support!
Our Class Needs: Each child needs a set of over-the-ear headphones. We will be demonstrating our FastForWord Reading Program in class and students need these headsets to participate on the iPads. Second grade is mandated to implement this program 3 days a week; however, I cannot begin the program until every student has the appropriate gear. Donations are also accepted for those who are unable to bring in a set OR for any that break over time.

Most importantly, I have not received all of the blue Student Information Packets. Please complete and return as soon as copies of these forms are placed in the office and my emergency bin. This information will be very important to have in case of an emergency.
VOLUNTEERS: I am currently updating my new chart of volunteers. I am overwhelmed with the number of parents and family members that have offered their assistance. Please view the form coming home Monday or the website "Volunteer" page (to be updated soon) and let me know if I have placed a name in error or forgot a name.

Snacks will be available for purchase and outside food is welcomed. Adults MUST be present at all times, NO DROP OFFS. You can pre-order a Round Table Pizza by Thursday, September 28th. A flier was attached to Friday's test/behavior packet.
OPTIONAL SOCIAL STUDIES FUN: We currently read a lesson on Family Traditions. Students made a rough draft copy of their very own story map. The map was basically a piece of paper folded twice to have 4 squares. Each square told a story, When they were born, Where they lived, and two important events in their lives. Students were then given the option to create a final version of the activity by adding pictures to the 4 squares and sharing their STORY MAP in class. This is optional and students are given a free trip the the treasure chest if they choose to complete this project. It's been fun listening to their stories!
INTERNATIONAL DOT DAY: Friday, September 15th will be International Dot Day. We will be decorating t-shirts and doing a variety of activities integrated with language arts, math, and art. Its going to be a fun day! Please send an email if you are interested in helping with centers on Friday from 11:30 - 1:00. You must be cleared with fingerprinting through our district office in order to participate.
