Halloween Traditions

  • TRADITIONAL COLORS:  Black and orange are the traditional colors of Halloween.  Black represents the end or death of summer while orange represents the colors of fall.
  • THE JACK-O-LANTERN:  Traditionally families spend time carving a pumpkin into their very own Jack-o-Lantern.   The Jack-O-Lantern is then displayed on the front porch letting trick-or-treaters know they were welcome to come and ring their doorbell for some candy.  Growing up we not only carved the pumpkin but also roasted the pumpkin seeds for a family treat later that evening.  Did you carve a pumpkin this year?  Have you every tasted pumpkin seeds or tried to grow your own pumpkins with the seeds?
  • COSTUMES:  Children and adults celebrate Halloween by dressing up in costume.  Some dress in scary costumes while others dress up like popular celebrities, children's show characters, princesses, super heroes, and so much more.  What is you costume of choice this year?
  • TRICK-OR-TREATING:  Each Halloween night, children walk neighborhoods with their family and friends and knock on doors hoping to receive a 'treat' from each home.  Traditions have changed over the years and there are many alternative ways children trick-or treat.  Some visit local parking lots where people have set up decorated cars and they open their trunks while children "Trunk-or-Treat" through the parking lot.  Others visit the local mall and visit stores to collect candy.  Do you trick-or treat with your family?  Where is your favorite place to go trick-or-treat?
  • MODERN DAY TRADITIONS:  Many families spend Halloween watching scary movies, visiting haunted houses, and visiting a pumpkin patch during this season.  As a child, this was the time we made homemade popcorn balls and candy apples.  Do you have special family traditions during the Halloween season?
